Founder Profile
Dr. William Conrad is GANSU, INC's Founder.  A graduate of Bethel College (MN), and the U. of Minnesota Medical School, he took his Ophthalmology Residency training at Walter Reed. He has been a US trained Board Certified Ophthalmologist for over 35 years, with private practices in Boulder, CO and Warner Robins, GA. His grandparents were Missionaries in Gansu Province, China for 32 years from 1892 through 1924, thus his interest in that area. In October 2000 he received the "Distinguished Alumnus of the Year" award from his alma mater, Bethel College for his work with Gansu, Inc.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

         GANSU, INC is led by an five-member Board of Directors and an Executive Director, Mrs. Janet Foskey.  GANSU, INC conducts its operating mission exclusively in Gansu and Qinghai Provinces, China. Volunteer recruitment, fund raising, and supply procurement are carried out from its U.S. headquarters in Warner Robins, GA.   Dr. & Mrs. Conrad now serve as a volunteers.

In 2007, 525 cataract operations were performed; a total of 5079 operations in 15 years.

In 2006, 466 surgical procedures were accomplished.

In 2005, 508 surgical procedures were accomplished; and for the second time, Bill and Maria Wojtaszewski, opticians, working with the first team in Turpan, dispensed over 1,200 pairs of glasses including some custom-ground lenses. 

Since 1993, over 160 volunteers have served for one-month terms in GANSU and QINGHAI Provinces under GANSU, INC. One summer included Xinjiang Province.  The beneficiaries of this free eye care are the needy poor in the rural areas of Gansu and Qinghai Provinces, West China.

Three teaching seminars (80 - 100 registrants) have been conducted in Gansu's capital city in '97,  '99 and '01.

Additional Comments
GANSU, INC has been warmly received by governmental officials in China. The highest awards given to foreign "experts" by Gansu Province (the "Dunhuang" award), and the central (Beijing) government (the "China Friendship" award), have been awarded to GANSU, INC's Founder, Dr. William C. Conrad.

A joint venture "West China Eye Bank" (first in west China) was negotiated with the Gansu Government to perform corneal transplantation.  Difficulty securing donated corneas has stalled this effort.
